 The National Endowment for Democracy Invites Fellowship Applications for 2011–2012
17.08.2010 Program: The Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program is an international exchange program that offers practitioners, scholars, and journalists from around the world the opportunity to spend five months at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), in Washington DC, in order to undertake independent research on democracy in a particular country or region. While in residence, fellows reflect on their experiences; engage with counterparts; conduct research and writing; consider best practices and lessons learned; and develop professional relationships within a global network of democracy advocates. |

16.08.2010 Late in the evening on 31 July all holiday-makers in the tourist zone Avaza, located on the Turkmen coast of the Caspian Sea, were urgently evicted from their hotels and were forced to leave the recreation zone. The reason was the President’s upcoming visit there. |

 Clampdown on civil rights activists continues
26.07.2010 Another public activist was added to the list of those barred from exiting the country. On July 16 Umida Dzhumabaeva who was heading for Kazakhstan via Bekdash at the invitation of her friends was denied exit from the country by the Migration Office. All of her documents met all requirements but the personnel of the Migration Service did not provide any explanation for the travel ban and advised her to contact Ashgabat. |

 The Russian Embassy in Ashgabat to resolve problem of dual nationals
26.07.2010 On July 19 at 9 a.m. the representative of the Consulate office addressed the crowd, which congregated in front of the Russian Embassy in Ashgabat and announced that Turkmen residents who had acquired Russian citizenship in 2003 could freely leave Turkmenistan to go to Russia. Those who obtained Russian citizenship after the year of 2003 will be given a three-month Russian visa. |

23.07.2010 The Migration Service of Turkmenistan is experiencing huge overcrowding. Hundreds of people are seeking to obtain new-style passports for international travel. It takes 7 to 9 days to stand in line to be able to submit a set of documents to apply for a passport. |

 Peace for palaces, war declared on huts
16.07.2010 The last remaining inhabitants of the then nation-wide resort village of Firyuza are being evicted from the location where several generations of their ancestors had lived. The eviction process was launched but not finalized by Turkmenbashi, who had built his countryside Palace here. The remaining residents were hoping that after his death life would change for the better and they would not be evicted. |

Departing to Russia gets more complicated The Turkmen side aggravates the situation
13.07.2010 An announcement has been posted at Ashgabat airport according to which the residents of Turkmenistan are not entitled to depart to Ukraine via Russia. The personnel of airline booking offices received the same instruction on July 5. The passengers who are looking to fly to Ukraine can only take the direct flight Ashgabat-Kiev, which operates twice a week. This implies that all passengers need to obtain a Ukrainian visa. |
