“The Rukhnama” still remains a mandatory subject in the curriculum of the Turkmen schools and the requirement to wear school uniforms by students and teachers has been made more severe.

The admissions procedures for applicants seeking admission to Russian and Belarus educational establishments is currently underway in Turkmenistan. Along with the testing in major subjects, all applicants, regardless of their chosen field of specialization, must take an exam in the Holy Rukhnama.
 

New Chancellor – new rates

After President G. Berdymukhammedov appointed a new chancellor of the Turkmen State University – the largest higher educational establishment in the country in July, the amount of bribe which needs to be paid to be admitted to a university has risen sharply.
 

Evacuated forever

Many Turkmen students, enrolled in higher educational establishments in Kyrgyzstan, will not be able to continue their education. Among them are those students who were evacuated to Turkmenistan from Kyrgyzstan’s city of Osh in June 2010.
 

Students barred from entering Kyrgyzstan

On 11 August the Turkmen Service of Radio Liberty reported that in the Lepap velayat students enrolled in Kyrgyzstan’s higher educational establishments have been summoned by the local authorities and asked to submit a signed confirmation that they will no longer continue their studies and travel to Kyrgyzstan.
 

A year later “rufesunik students” are leaving Turkmenistan

Former students of the American University of Central Asia (AUCA), funded by the Open Society Institute – the Soros Foundation, who became hostages in their home country last summer have been permitted to exit the country to go to St. Petersburg to continue their education at the Smolny Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences under the St. Petersburg State University.
 

Selectees and crowd

The scenario for the opening of educational establishments was widely practiced back under Niyazov’s presidency, and in the meantime this practice is being reinforced. The best schoolchildren and teachers from various municipal schools are selected. Throughout several weeks the red-carpet welcome for the President is rehearsed with each word and movement carefully learnt by heart, and then, during the grand opening of a school the benefits of the educational reform are demonstrated to the President, along with all the country’s residents, watching TV broadcasts.
 

Higher educational establishment to be established in Dashoguz

Dashoguz was the only region, which did not have its own higher educational establishment. Now, however, the buildings of the Agricultural Institute, located in the south-western part of the city, are scheduled to be opened soon.
 

Turkmen students rely on UN

In March there will be 8 months since the government of Turkmenistan imposed a travel ban on 165 students, who had been previously enrolled in the American University of Central Asia (AUCA). Those who tried all options but are still being barred from travelling have the last hope left – the forthcoming visit of the UN Secretary-General.
 

Remaining students

The former AUCA students, who are still barred from travelling, are concerned with the fact that in their opinion the US diplomats will make no further efforts and will not fight for travel permits for the remaining one hundred young Turkmenistani residents.
