Travel ban lifted postmortem

Mukhammetmyrat Achilov, the son of Turkmen journalist Gurbansoltan Achilova, committed suicide after failing to secure a permit to exit the country from Turkmenistan’s State Migration Service. A month after Mukhammetmyrat’s death his relatives received an official letter from the Migration Service, allowing M. Achilov to leave Turkmenistan.

Gurbansoltan Achilova has been employed as a correspondent of Radio “Azatlyk” since August 2007. Since then, she and her family members have been regularly subjected to severe pressure by the Turkmen special services. Recently Gurbansoltan lost her son.
